Description: Cherry Head Conures are one of the larger
conures, being about 14-15 inches in length from head to tip of
their tail. When young, these conures are pretty much all green
(but will sometimes already have a little bit of red on the
underside of their wings). It takes about 2-3 moults (usually
about 1-2 years) for Cherry-Head Conures to get all of their red
coloring. Talking Ability: Fair. Can learn a couple ords/phrases,
but some never talk. More likely to copy sounds.
Loundness Factor: Pretty loud birds. Usually not as loud as
Suns, Nandays or Patties, but when they scream, let them be
heard! I have actually noticed that they tend to like to make this
sound that sounds like they are saying hey or cooing sounds...
which is actually pretty pleasant to the ears, plus it is very cute!
=) They would not make good apartment birds.
Personality: They make good pets, but have a tendancy to get
nippy if not properly instructed. They make good family pets, but
I wouldn't recomend them for children unless it has already
been tamed. Unless your child is extremlly good with birds, and
you know and trust your bird, it is usually better ..Most people
will not suggest that you let your child interact with your bird. I
strongly disagree. My children are the ages of 10 and 4 and my
ten year old is excellent with all of my birds. My four year old
knows by trial and error on her part that if she sticks her hand
out there she might get bit. So therefor she always asks before
touching. So depending on the child itself and you know your
own child so if you think they could handle a bird of this size and
be mature about it then I say go for it.. if the parrot gets upset
and the child gets bit then you know the child did something to
make the bird uncomfortable. This is NOT the parrot's fault and
the child should also be aware that birds can be upset and might
bite (but not to take it personally)..
Diet: This should consist of Pellets, a good Seed Mix
(Safflower,Oats, some Sunflower--also sprouted--Paddy Rice,
Canary Seed and various Millets), with Fruits and Vegetables
(particularly apples and carrots) and Greens. White bread,
and biscuit for rearing. Diets may vary so you should consult
your Avian Veterinarian. I personally use Higgen tiel mix along
with Zupreem pellets every other day. They always have fresh
fruits and veggies available to them.
To sum things up a cherry head is a wonderful bird when
showed the respect and love and attention that a bird deserve.
Most owners will tell you we always get bit for one reason or
another. Anyone who tells you otherwise you might wanna
rethink your trust in that person...HAHA just kidding.
Birds are essentially wild birds. Just because we bring them in
pet them feed them and cage them does not take the wildness
from them. Treat them with respect and love and the relationship
between you and the bird will only grow...I hope this has helped
you make a decision to buy your first or 5th or 100th bird
I personally do not see how I ever lived without at least one........
